Fish
 
Lake Ontario was once home to one of the most important and well-known fish in the world - the Atlantic salmon.  They were wiped out before 1900, by farming and development on their spawning streams and overfishing in both Lake Ontario and the streams that feed it.  For the last 20 years, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) and its research partners have been studying the potential for restoring Atlantic salmon to Lake Ontario.
