Honouring Loved Ones While Growing the Forest The Memorial Tree Planting Program at Presqu'ile

In 2019, the Friends of Presqu’ile established the Memorial Tree Planting Program to provide a meaningful way for individuals and families to pay tribute to loved ones or mark milestone events like birthdays and anniversaries. Rather than traditional plaques or benches, this initiative focuses on planting native trees - offering both a growing legacy and an opportunity to support the reforestation of Presqu’ile Provincial Park.

Planting ceremonies take place twice a year - in April and October - when trees are dormant and most likely to thrive. The trees, grown from seeds collected within the park, are planted in a specially allocated site with donor participation encouraged whenever possible. Each planting is photographed and shared with donors, adding a heartfelt gesture to the experience.

Since the first event in October 2020, 181 trees have been planted by 135 donor groups. As these trees mature, they will transform the once open area into a living continuation of the forest, which has suffered severe loss due to the Emerald Ash Borer infestation. In time, a new area will be chosen for continued memorial plantings - ensuring this program not only honours memory but also nurtures the future of the park's natural landscape.

This collection of Memorial Trees across from the Camp Office is fenced to protect the young trees from herbivores like deer.
